I believe this is the healthiest fat to use for cooking. When I was growing up I would go to my great grandparents for the summer and this is what they used and my great grandmother lived until she was 98 and my great grandfather was 4 years younger than her and he lived until he was 97. My grandparents and my parents were die hard Crisco shortening users they lived long lives, but none of them lived past 90 so I believe ( in my opinion)this lard is best if you are a frequent fryer to prolong your life instead of all of the cooking oils
I've been using lard in a suet recipe for my tweety birds at the feeders (they love it), but yesterday I decided to try using it in a recipe for biscuits. They came out more flavorful than ones I'd made with shortening AND there was no need for Tums. Biscuits are always followed by a great need for antacids. Will I be using it in further recipe adventures instead of shortening? You betcha!
Someone pranked me by filling my tub up with pig fat!!! We got even with them by eating it anyway! OK, seriously folks, this is the only stuff for frying. Vegetable oils turn brown and stinky, but lard stays clear after multiple uses. Burnt food sinks to the bottom and you can scrape the good lard off the top and reuse it.
I use this lard for making batches of Zick's peanut butter suet for the birds. It's handy to have the larger tub for making multiple batches. On occasion, I have used this lard for frying chicken and cornbread. It helps creating a crispy crust. It has a neutral taste. Some brands of lard can be strong and overpower the food you are frying, not this one. I also clean and re-use the tub after the lard is gone.
We've switched to lard as most health articles are now saying it is healthier than vegetable based products. This is way cheaper than any other lard product we can find anywhere else. It's a best buy for us.
I prefer this product over shortening I only wish it wasn't hydrogenated. Don't go halfway healthy metabolically speaking. if you want to give us something natural give it to us all the way natural. down with hydrogenation. The people have spoken!
Oh yeah, I found the right quantity, with an affordable price. I've bought this brand before and it's good. I bought it for my mom and she's excited.
It is great. It doesn't smell as bad as oil in the French fryer cause that can get nasty. Thank you for being available at my favorite Walmart.
actually.. we used this Lard as craft project. Students made bird treats with it. molded wild birdseed into the lard. They love it.
This is the second time I have tried to purchase this item. The first time, the shipment just disappeared. It never even shipped, just got lost somewhere after the shipping information was sent to FedEx. THIS shipment, I just opened the box and the picture I attached is what I see: no additional shipping materials to buffer or cushion the product, no lid on the bucket, and the clear seal over the top broken and the contents leaking out into the box!. I'm not sure if this is a Walmart issue or if this bucket just comes without any lid???? Either way, serious issues with this.
