One of the problems we have struggled with during our windy midwestern winters is the scattering of bird food with every gust of wind. The birds don't seem to mind sitting on a swinging feeder, but the bird food did not stay in place long enough to be eaten. These suet dough nuggets solve that problem for us. They are just heavy enough to be anchored into the feeders we use. For the most part, that is good. The downside of that is that the marauding squirrels now have a convenient loaf size chuck of food to steal instead of one single seed. The birds swarmed over the few nuggets left behind and devoured them. We had to relocate the feeder to better fend off the pirates. Overall, this is a great way to get some solid food for birds (and squirrels) that will stay put in a breeze.
This Mealworm delight is fantastic. I never feed birds, but I wanted to give this stuff a try. I had birds showing up within 30 minutes after putting it out. It was two crows. So after 30 minutes of scaring them off. The other birds felt safe to check out this new food that I am sure they had never tried before. The birds really love this stuff. The birds ate up the 27oz bag of nuggets like it was candy. These nuggets attracted so many different kinds birds. I didn't even know there were that many birds living around my house. It is winter time right now, so I am sure the birds really appreciate the easy food find. I just poured the whole bag on the ground under the tree in my front yard. Since the birds love these nuggets so well. I think the best way to use this product is to get a bird feeder and mix in some regular bird seed to give them a variety. I would definitely recommend this product if you are a bird watcher.
I had no idea what this was at first. We have regular birdseed. We put some out without birdseed just to see what would happen. The birds gathered quickly. I couldn't get a picture of them bc apparently they can sense the slightest movement around them. So they would fly away before I could get the picture. The biggest con is the smell. It's horrendous. My dog followed me everywhere even with a closed bag. Once it was out, my dogs went for a frantic search to find it. We had to put it and the seed very high. It didn't melt. The birds are well.
Selected this to try since my bird feeder was getting low. Its awfully crumbly, but the bird feeder I have is sectioned into 3 with different opening sizes. So I just added this to the solid section. The birds seem to enjoy it and area active everyday. It doesn't smell too bad. It has a resealable top section to it. A decent sized bag that lasted a while. I'd get it again.
The family of crows I feed loved these from the first bit! The crows keep the hawks from eating the doves at our open tray feeders (with squirrel baffle). In return, I feed the crows. These are big enough for them to see scattered on the grass. Soft enough to load up a few to take back to their nests. So much easier and cleaner to use than the suet cakes. It's too hot here most of the year to hang the cakes as they melt. Surprisingly, although they contain peanuts as well as mealyworms, there is no obvious peanut scent, nor whole peanuts visible. So the squirrels and deer so far are not drawn to them. So far, only the crows and bluejays (same family of birds) are interested in these. The bag they come in is thick, but the ziploc comes open easily, so I've doublebagged them. I believe Walmart sells these in a bulk, multi-pound box, which would make them less per ounce than the cakes. Lastly, because I prefer to feed the bigger birds on the ground and the smaller ones at feeders I don't do this, but the pellets can be easily broken into smaller pieces, so you can add them to open trays or hanging feeders.
After we placed the mealworms on the ground it wasn't long before we had probably 50 birds on the ground under our bird feeder . They really like the meal worms and keep coming back for more . I tried to get a picture of all the birds on the ground but they fly off when I open the door . We will definitely buy some of this as an additional treat to the sunflower seeds we have in the hanging bird feeder .
We still have snow on the ground here in NH. I wanted to help out the new family of bluebirds that moved into my neighborhood. I am hoping that these suet dough nuggets, mealworms and little pieces of fruit will substain them until they will be able to find their natural food.
I put this out on a flat feeder on my table and the bigger birds just go crazy over it. Specifically, I have some blue jays that are always out there taking it. I am impressed because the nuggets are very well put together and they do not fall apart when they are taken out of the bag.
Well, I tried this bird suet out to see if it would attract more/other birds to my yard but after having it out for a week now the birds just haven't eaten much if any of it. I put some in areas by itself and mixed it near other bird seeds, where I know that birds visit my yard and eat all of the time, but they have not really touched this Mealworm Suet Dough Nuggets Wild Bird Suet. I did have the usual birds show up in my yard and they went right for the regular bird seeds but didn't touch this suet. It could be the time of year that the particular birds that would eat this suet are just not around or the birds in my area just don't go for this kind of feed. I'll wait a few months and put a bit more out again to see what happens. For now, birds in the upper South Carolina area just aren't interested.
I put some in the tube feeder they have yet to eat it (9 days later) I put some on the ledge of another feeder and the birds immediately flocked to it but hours later I realized they only ate around the Mealworm Suet, they eventually ate those but it took 5 days. not thinking, I put some in a container on the ground and well, my Beagle ate those before I could stop her. Beagle approved but bird - not so much.
