Great soil block

JamiMSR November 1, 2021

Honestly, this is a great product for the price. I think the best way to pack in the soil is to use your thumb, and then after press down on the plunger hard without lifting up to get an even bottom. Doing this, I was able to even pick up the blocks and move them around. Overall, this is a bargain if you want to try out a new method of seed sowing.

Prefer this over the pods

Scheay November 7, 2021

I thought I'd give this a try. It's cheaper to start plants from seed than buying starts. So I thought I'd try this out and see if I like it better than the little seed pods you can buy. What I like about the block maker is you can choose between two different sizes. It can make four mini soil blocks or one big one. I like to do the big one because it allows the plant a really good start without having to re plant it too soon. It does use up more soil that way so it's really a preference.

Jury is still out

TXDaddy November 20, 2021

Using this soil block maker is definitely not as simple as putting soil into cell seedling trays but creating these soil blocks eliminates the need for cell trays and pots and also makes transplanting easier. This 2-in-1 device can make two different soil block sizes. The big round block is easier to make and is more stable than the 4 smaller quarter circle blocks (by splitting a circle into 4 equal quadrants) which can fall down because the base is smaller and the block is uneven. Both sizes took some trial and error with different soil and moisture levels. I found using seed starting potting soil worked best for me. Using soil that is too dry, too wet or too coarse will cause the blocks to fall apart. Once you get the correct consistency, pack the soil in tightly to get a solid block. Once the soil blocks are formed, be sure to never leave them in the rain or water it too much as it will cause the soil to dissolve and crumble. This device worked but it took some patience to get the soil right. I am still undecided on the odd shape of the smaller blocks. I will give it another try next season before I decide if they will permanently replace the cell trays.

Works pretty well

Pcatfam3 November 8, 2021

Since i live in apartment and don't really have a yard or garden, I used this with potting soil. It worked pretty well. I was able to use it to make some starts from some plants that I needed to trim back. The soil block maker did make a decent soil block, although you must make sure that there's enough moisture in the soil for the block to hold together. My plant starts are doing well and should have roots starting very soon.

Great for getting you seeds ready for planting.

OldGrayWolf November 10, 2021

This review is for the Fiskars Soil Block Maker in Orange and Black. This Fiskars soil block maker is a handy tool for making blocks for starting your seeds for planting. With this tool you have the options of making one large block that is about 3.5 inches in size or 4 smaller blocks that are 1 inch each. You are able to make the larger blocks by twisting the base and removing the insert that makes the 4 smaller blocks. I will most likely be using the 4 one inch insert for the seeds I will be planting so I will not take the unit apart. I filled the soil block maker with some very wet planting soil. It wasn't difficult to fill up the soil block maker just a little messy. I wouldn't recommend doing it on the kitchen counter which is where I had decided to start my project. It was finished outside where everything could be hosed down afterwards. The Fiskars soil block maker did make some very nice planting blocks. The blocks have a divot on the top for placing the seed. I am impressed with how well and easy it is to make soil blocks with this tool. It should really help when starting seeds in the spring. The Fiskars Soil Block Maker gets a green thumb of approval from me.

Pretty tedious

Kgarrett1 November 6, 2021

If you have the time on your hands and are not doing alot of plants . Then you would probably not mind spending the extra time getting this right . I found . In order to form a plug the soil moisture must be just right . To dry it crumbs , to wet it turns to slop . I end up using semi moist soil . Packing it very firmly and then tricling water into the pods . It does have drain holes for the water to run through. I like it makes a seed hole . I tried to use it to propagate plant cutting but could keep the soil ball together. . .. I think its a cool idea and timely during covid ahorages to be able to start seeds But I am a busy person and found it to time consuming for me to use
