This chili paste is pretty spicy in my opinion but if you don't use too much it really perks up many different foods. I use it on rice dishes, add a dash to ramen noodles, sometimes add just a touch to hamburger or hot dog for a little heat that is different from conventional pepper products like tabasco sauce. Try it! This product seems to be competitively priced and is cheaper at Walmart than at asian specialty grocery stores.
I really love trying food from all around the world. I'm on a fixed, limited income; so it really pays for me to try and cook exotic recipes myself at home, rather than eating out in restaurants. This delicious, spicy ( but not deadly 😜) garlic sauce/paste is a versatile ingredient I can use making various dishes. I can mix it with some yogurt to marinate chicken in; it imparts a rich deep flavor and gives an attractive color to the meat before grilling or roasting. I can add a dollop to sauces to zhuzhz up the flavor. I've found this to be a little jar with a lot of uses around my kitchen!
I like this sauce. It's versatile. It doesn't have to be use just for Asian food but I add it to marinara sauce, use it like an Italian deli hoagie spread, mix into dips for snacks, veggies, seafood, etc. It's not hot and doesn't have a definitive Asian profile. Definitely not Huy Fong but there are so many ways to make sambal oelek. Just go to SE Asia. Otherwise, it's a good item for the table.
I used this to make Tom Yum soup with chicken and shrimp. it is significantly different from the sambal olek I usually buy, but I still feel as though it was a good addition to my soup. if you cook a lot of Asian food, you know that just moving from one brand to another can give you a very different taste. For anyone who is interested, here is my Tom Yum soup recipe. I like my food very spicy 2containers of Swanson's 32 ounce Ramen broth and one of low sodium chicken broth 4 tablespoons of lemongrass paste the zest and juice of 3 lemons because I should've used more lemongrass paste but ran out 2 tablespoons of Sambal olek (name pric would be better, but this worked} Fresh ginger equal to 1.5 the size of my thumb cut into slices 15 Kafir lime leaves cut up two handfuls of leftover shredded carrots 5 knorr Tom Yum cubes 10 Thai chilies sliced down the middle, seeded, and then cut into strips lengthwise (it is best to wear gloves. They are less irritating if you cut them when they are frozen) 7 tablespoons of fresh chopped garlic three Roma tomatoes seeded and cut into big chunks Two small containers of mushrooms cut into chunks Two med white onions sliced chunky Some red and green pepper strips A few celery stalks 16 ounces of frozen cut up chicken breast One bag of cooked and frozen large shrimp A large bunch of cilantro A big handful of scallions cut lengthwise into strips Boil the broth with the herbs and knorr cubes for few minutes. Add the veggies and chicken, and simmer. At the end add cooked defrosted shrimp, cilantro, and green onions. Then add fish sauce, fried chilis, and lime juice to taste. my husband likes glass noodles, I. Eat. Bean thread noodles, in his soup. I'm going to cook up some noodles, leave them in the fridge, and add them to his broth right before serving . Enjoy!
I found it a little bitter. wasn't what I was expecting. it was bitter enough to make me think I should make my own which I'm working on and havent yet tried
I normally get Huy Fong Sambal Oeleck, but thought I would try this brand instead. I found it was too liquidy and had a nice heat level, but just not as good as my normal brand I would not get it again. I like to use it as a condiment on my Asian foods. This just wasn't the quality I'm used to.
The flavor was very good and all ingredients were clearly stated and clean except they ruined the texture with the xanthan gumm addition! would have been better without any fillers! the vegetables and spices were perfect without this. it did affect flavor but mostly gave it a slimy texture. U don't know why they feel the need to add such thickeners to a delicious product that does not need it!
This is made with jalapeño peppers and doesn't have the flavor of traditional sambal. It's also thickened with xanthan gum, which gives it a somewhat unappetizing appearance. It's ok if you're simply looking for a hot sauce.
I think it's taste vinegary. it's very hot, well at least too hot for me. I didn't like it. some people that tried it , liked it. but right here now my opinion is the only one that matters because I'm riding the review lol. I put it in my beans but maybe it wasn't a good combination, maybe it will go good with something else. maybe it wasn't made to go in beans. but when I put them in the beans and I gave them to my guests they really enjoyed it, except for I didn't. so I ended up giving away the beans because I couldn't even eat them all. so you might enjoy the sauce, I hope you do,
It is a good product in all aspects except value. This item should cost one-third to one-half the price to make it acceptable for purchase. Most likely, I'll see this at Ollie's next year, and I'll buy up as many cases as they have at 99 cents a jar.
