Great Value Brown rice 5 lbs, 80 oz. is great. A friend ran out and I purchased it for them. They were very surprised with a 5 lb. bag. But I told them they could store it in a container with a lid to keep it dry. I use Rubbermaid they work great. I highly recommend this product to everyone.
Makes great dishes. I've used various rices with good results. Occasionally, I make vegetarian dishes for myself. You can add meat. I add quinoa or cook it in the rice. First cook spices in a little oil, add onions, peppers, fresh spices %26 vegetables are best. After they're cooked down while stirring, I add the rice %26 quinoa. I've even added lentils. This makes a great protein meal or even soup by using different items.
I've been buying this rice regularly and it's a pantry staple for me. It cooks up consistently and has a nice texture, not too mushy, not too dry. I usually make it in a Joseph Joseph microwave rice cooker, and it comes out perfect every time with barely any effort. It's honestly made cooking brown rice way easier and more consistent for me. My go-to is adding toasted almond oil, garlic chili crisp, and green onions, and this rice holds up perfectly to all those flavors. It absorbs everything really well without getting heavy, which is exactly what I want. For the price and size, it's a really solid option if you eat rice often. Nothing fancy, but it does its job and works great as a base for quick meals.
I love getting brown rice for cooking fried rice. These do take awhile to cook. Approximately 40 to 45 min. Love the taste especially in fried rice meals
I use brown rice for most cooking and meals - including in making my dogs' food (since commercial dog food has gotten so expensive. And, thankfully, they eat it when mixed with other fresh ingredients.) This product is a straight forward grain. It can be a bit mushy, so it is important to time the cooking just right.
Purchased GV brown rice for yrs, always decent quality/ flavor! Finding more hulls now than when I first started buying this? Have to rinse a lot more. But still a decent, economy brown rice!
If you like the nutty flavor of brown rice, this product is at a good price point. We prepare it with a rice cooker according to the OE's directions, and have repeatable results.
For whatever reason this brown rice-whch we cooked in an Instapot-tasted bitter and dreadful. We were horribly disappointed since my huaband bought several bags with the intension of making something called "Dude Slop" which was shown on a popular website as being something guys could make a big batch of, break it down into several portions and eat for a week. The rice tasted horrible-although it was fluffy and nice for brown rice I guess-since it was prepared in our shiny new Instapot. Now, we are stuck with 3 more bags of the brown rice and don't want to make it since it is very, very bitter tasting. Looked up brown rice and apparently it could be stale(no way of knowing since it came in sealed bags from Walmart). Now what?
Not such a “great value”! Too many dead grains, dark grain and hulls. A consumer will have to spend more time trying to remove these items from the product than actually cooking this product. There is a different brand with a far better quality of grains than Great Value!
This is the second time I order this rice and it does not simmer the water or get soft at all. Almost an hour later and the rice still had water in it before it simmer down and started to cook finally.
