I have been using Kretschmer Original Toasted Wheat Germ for as long as I can remember. I eat about one tablespoon a day, call me crazy if you want to but I will be 92 years old in a few days. My grandmother got me started on wheat germ years and years ago, my mother used it also! Love this stuff!
Kretchmer is the best wheat germ available. It is light and fresh, an important point since wheat germ tends to go rancid in a surprisingly short time. Picking out those little wheat germ flakes from the center of a wheat kernel is a very tedious and difficult process using tweezers--a solid value overall.
I've tried others, such as Red Mill, but I consider Kretschmer wheat germ to be the best. Some brands have weird aftertaste noticeable when eaten directly and I don't find that with Kretschmer wheat germ. I use this in smoothies, put it on ice cream, put it in cereal, and sometimes just have a spoonful directly.
I ordered 5 lbs. of bulk wheat germ and found that it was uncooked - removing the water content by toasting it in the oven reduced the amount and was tedious. Also, it seemed to have added cellulose in it. Buying a reputable brand like Kretschmer's at the Walmart price - about $2.50 cheaper per bottle than the grocery store price!
I have been using this brand of wheat germ in my baking and cereals for over 20 years. The toasting is carefully done so as not to diminish the delicate and highly nutritious food value while bringing out the nutty sweet flavors. The vacuum packed glass jar and refrigeration is essential for keeping wheat germ from going rancid. I take 4 to 6 months to use up one jar so I know it can keep well. I sneak a bit of it into most everything I bake (unless there is already a lot of whole grain goodness) to make up for the fact that most of the wheat we consume has been bleached to death. The germ is where the superfood ingredients are - minerals and vitamins lost when flour is bleached. A big plus for me is the fact that Kretschmer refrains from the dishonest 'non-GMO' labeling nonsense which is just fear mongering propaganda from the organic foods cartel. There is no GMO wheat grown in the US and GMO is only a plant breeding method, not an actual ingredient.
i am very thankful to walmart.com for carrying this item. i can't get to walmart right now and i need the home delivery service... a great service by the way. i remember eating this same wheat germ as a young person. it is good for me and very delicious. it arrived with no damage. it is a glass container. it was very fresh and it tasted delicious. eating it helps me to feel better, happier, and to have more energy. thank you.
I've used this before. It mixes well with the GV yogurt with little taste and slightly chewy texture. GV yogurt is better than any other brand.
I really don't know why this is so expensive, except that ot is hard to find and it is so good for you! I suppose richer, younger shoppers don't mind the price. And we love this on top of lots of different foods. We only use a sprinkle....
It is the first time I have had wheat germ. I was pleasantly surprised. It has a good taste, but it's best to put in smoothies or yogurts for health benefits due to its texture.
I've eaten this since I was a child.. I sprinkle it on hot or cold cereal.. it's adds a great nutritional value to my diet
