I had been using scotchbrite pads, grill cleaner pads, steel wool, and other tough pads to sometimes clean up my cast iron pans when sometimes food gets stuck to the walls of the pan. I had heard of the chainmail pads thinking it was a gimmick, but now that I've used it, I'll never use an abrasive pad again! Its a simple chainmail over a silicone pad, that makes quick work of stuck on foods from cast iron pans and even grill grates. It was faster and has less cleanup than other scrapers. It says this isn't for every day or regular cleanups probably because it'll knock your season off down to bare iron. You don't have to press hard and the chainmail will do all the work for you, the entire thing gets a little clogged with the scrape bits, however its dishwasher safe to just toss in there and make it like new again. I don't like this isn't made in the USA, however since its just a sponge and almost a consumable item, I guess I can let it pass.
Now this is one heavy duty scrubbing pad, no doubt. If you cook with Cast Iron you know things stick and the groves are hard to clean. Well this scrubbing pad takes the brunt of the hard hand scrubbing work and does it for you. The chain link that covers the pad is quite strong, but gently enough for those cast iron messes. You just can't go without the chain scrubbing pad if you love your cast iron but don't love the cleanup.
This is one of those super simple products that just work and will continue to work for years to come. I used to to clean the rust buildup on my Blackstone griddle top and it made quick work out of something that used to take me forever with multiple scour pads, that would end up in the garbage afterwards. Cant wait to use it on our cast iron pans in the future!
When you buy a Lodge Cast iron Grill it is a must to get the Chainmail scrubbing pad. There is no other heavy duty pad out there because of what they call chain mail. Chain mail is what they wore in medieval times to protect themselves in battle. I have never seen any pad like this anywhere. It is great for the cast iron to get rid of burnt on foods and on any grill. It really does the job!
This scouring pad was rugged, yet safe. It scrubbed the burnt on gunk off the grill without leaving dangerous metal bristles behind to adulterate your food, next time. I didn't injure myself either, as the chainmail design has no sharp edges. Cleaning the grill has never been so easy and pleasant before! Usually, it is a yucky job that I dread, but I was able to quickly knock this task out and enjoy the rest of my day.
The Lodge Chainmail scrubbing pad in blue is great to use when a brush doesn't get all the stuck on food off your cast iron. It does help to remove most of the uneven build up on the pan. It doesn't remove 100% of the food, but it does get pretty much of it off. I usually soak my cast iron with dish detergent and hot water for a few minutes. I will then break out the Chainmail scrubber pad and get to work on it. It fits nicely in the hand. Once I cleaned the cast iron I just put the scrubber in the dishwasher and it's ready for the next use.
This is a very nice cast iron pan scrubber and it seems to be very durable. It is a silicone sponge surrounded by chain mail to get the toughest messes off all your cast iron pans. My pans are fairly new, so I don't have as much build up as some pictures I've seen online, but it worked well on my pans and was very easy to use. This scrubber will clean your pans easily without stripping it of it's seasoning if done correctly. This scrubber is not supposed to be used every day, it's only for the really stuck on messes, but if you are to use it often, don't scrub too hard so as to not remove the seasoning. That's the only downfall I had with the product, because I thought it would be able to be used frequently. This scrubber is also nice because it is dishwasher safe, so you can rest easy trying to clean the chainmail and silicone.
First, this is not meant to clean grease off your cast iron, you don't want to do that. It's meant to clean off any grime and flaking material left on your cast iron after cooking. You need the thin layer of grease/oil on your pan to keep it seasoned and working properly. Some people use salt to aid in the scrubbing/cleaning but I've found this works well with nothing but warm water. I had this for use on my outside grill and cast iron griddle, where it worked wonderfully on the griddle side, although it didn't fit between the groves on the grill side as well as I hoped. It worked well enough that my wife stole it for use on her heavy cast iron fry pans and skillets in the kitchen. She had been using an antique chain mail scrubber, but liked this one better because of the silicone insert. Guess I'll need another one for the grill and my cast iron camping pans and grill.
It cleans the grill great but that scraping sound is awful! I do not recommend to people who hate chalkboard because It sounds a lot like that. But if you can get passed that then it cleans great! Easy to clean once your done cleaning the grill. I do like that its able to be squeezed so it can ring out. Even though it's not a sponge lol. It just depends on your liking.
I did not even realize that there was a special cleaning pad for cast iron and always used just water and a sponge or steel pad until I saw this product and decided to try it. This is heavier than I thought, not like the typical steel scrub pad. This is different because it has a silicon-sponge in the middle. The exterior is good at getting the grimey stuff off the pan but one thing I do not like which is also true of the cheaper steel pads that I have used in the past is that stuff gets stuck in between the wires and it is hard to clean out. Also, I don't like to use soap when I clean my cast iron because it strips the seasoning off it, so maybe I will go back to just using water and a sponge or regular stainless steel pad. The worse case scenerio of using the cheaper options like I had been doing is that the cleaning requires two steps; first the stainless steel pad followed by a sponge. No need to have one stuffed inside the other in an attempt to simplify the process. The concept is good if you do use soap but after cleaning the pan you then have to clean this.
