Excellent delivery, but short product life

Timothy January 1, 2026

My Nest Protect arrived speedily and in perfect condition, but with only 3 (out of 10) years left of its useful life. The price should have been adjusted accordingly, to $66.95.

Product Expires in 3 Months?!

Eric August 2, 2025

Be careful! This product (like all smoke detectors) expires after 10 years from the manufacturing date (not the purchase date). I just received mine 3 months before the 2025 expiration date. Nest says that the device will continuously chirp and send you warnings once it expires, telling you to replace it. Since Nest is no longer making this product, it is best to avoid it altogether!

No Longer Supported and Lifespan Very Short

Roland August 2, 2025

The NEST Protect smoke and CO detectors are no longer manufactured. They will not function after 10yrs from manufacture date listed on back of the device. I just opened mine and discovered the manufacture date was 2017 so only 2 years of functionality remain. Purchased in June 2025 as new from a local Walmart. I will be returning device for full refund.

Almost expired product with less than 10% life

Ashok August 10, 2025

I purchased the latest 2nd-generation version of this product in August 2025, expecting it to have a 10-year lifespan. However, upon opening the box, I discovered that the unit's life had actually begun in May 2016 and is set to expire in May 2026—leaving me with less than a year of usable life on a supposedly brand-new item. This feels misleading, like a gimmick to offload nearly expired inventory. I'm returning it to Walmart.

Deceptive

Peter August 1, 2025

I purchased this NEST smoke detector through Walmart's website, sold by one of their marketplace sellers, advertised as "new in box." The unit was expensive, as expected for a high-quality NEST product, but I was majorly displeased to discover it had a manufacture date of 2018, with an expiration date of September 2028 clearly labeled on the back of the unit. NEST smoke detectors have a 10-year shelf life, whether used or unused, after which they are programmed to alert and require replacement. This means the unit I received is already 7 years into its lifespan, leaving only about 3 years of usability—far from the "new" condition promised. The misrepresentation of this product as new is seriously disappointing, especially for a purchase made through Walmart, a retailer I trusted to vet their marketplace sellers. The seller's failure to disclose the 2018 manufacture date feels deceptive, as this significantly impacts the product's value and longevity. I'm currently in the process of returning the item, but the experience has left me wary of future purchases from Walmart's marketplace. For a premium product like a NEST smoke detector, I expected better quality control and transparency. I would caution others to check manufacture dates carefully when buying from third-party sellers on Walmart's site.Rating: 1/5 stars – Misrepresented product, severely dated, and not worth the price.

10-year-old dead stock.

JJ June 4, 2025

Extreme dead stock. Was produced in 2015 in expires December 2025. Absolutely ridiculous that you're selling old stock. I know the item was discontinued, but this is absurd. Shame on you Walmart but what else would I expect?

Outdated model

Don July 18, 2025

This is an outdated model. These items have a ten year life and this one was made in 2017 and only has two years left until it automatically shuts off. Returning for a refund. Make sure you are given the date on Nest protect before purchasing.

It's already expired

Joe June 18, 2025

If I could give zero stars I would. Upon purchasing my Nest Protect and getting all set up I was informed that it expires in January. It's supposed to be good for 10 years and the one I just purchased in June now expires in January. Thanks for nothing.

Only three years of life left and sold as new!

Suzanne July 12, 2025

Don't bother. I purchased two of these and they are still selling really old stock. One will reach its 10 year expiration in 2028 and I purchased it in 2025! A waste of the sale price of 110 bucks for sure! Just wait for the First Alert replacement and suck up the loss of path lights.

Sam June 14, 2025

The item is only good for ten years from manufacture date. I'm trying to replace one expiring soon. Twice I purchased this item from Walmart and they both are already nine years old!! Come to find out Google has stopped manufacturing them. Look elsewhere….
